How do you choose colours in website design?

Tuesday 8 July 2008 @ 4:07 am

by Karra Maxim
One facet of a well-designed website is its colour scheme. selection of colour is important in creating the look that the site’s owner wants to portray. if the look of the website doesn’t meet the users expectations, then they’ll leave and probably never go back to the site. This is regularly the reason why a web site is not doing as well as it should.

Knowing about colour perception can make life a whole lot easier when choosing a colour scheme for a website. knowing the colours that can irritate & which can calm is important in giving the user the right impression & experience of the website. why would you annoy a user when you want them to buy from your web site?

Colour contrast and balance is another technique you should know about. It can be used to direct users to desired pages of areas within the site.

Below are some of the most well-used colours and their emotional connotations.

White is a very minimalist colour. associated with simplicity, purity and cleanliness, it can be used effectively to highlight images.

Yellow is linked to comfort, liveliness, energy and joy. its a vibrant colour that can be used to highlight certain areas on a webpage.

The colour red can summon up feelings of passionate, courage and strength. its a strong colour and if used in small doses, it’s excellent for emphasising points.

The colour black can be linked to death, mourning, power and style. many metal bands use black as their predominant colour due to its links with death and evil.

Yellow summons up thoughts of summer, joy and optimism. it is a colour that can be overwhelming and if used alongside with black, it creates a feeling of warning.

Like yellow, red is linked with love, sex and energy. it can be overpowering if over used, but it’s exciting to attract attention.

Brown can be used to express trust and honesty in a design. it can also be associated with ageing, warmth & comfort.

Orange is linked with enthusiasm, creativity & stimulation. it is used in designing websites to denote friendliness.

Darker shades of purple can be extremely deep & luscious. it can be linked to royalty, spirituality, arrogance & luxury. the lighter end of the spectrum can stand for romance & delicacy. it is a colour that’s not really used much on sites.

Full of energy, vibrancy & stimulation, orange is a wonderful colour to use in designing for the internet. it can be used to bring a sense of youthfulness to a design.

In conclusion, when choosing colours for designing for the web, you should think about to the way it can potentially affect users. The choice of colours might look great or meet your brief, although will it put your users off? by making some simple changes, like changing the buy now button to a vibrant colour might generate more sales. Serious consideration and thought can mean the difference between success and failure.

Web Design or SEO - Which is More Important?

Tuesday 8 July 2008 @ 3:07 am

by Sherice Jacob
That sounds like a chicken-or-the-egg question doesn’t it? Both your website’s design and your search engine optimization (SEO) efforts are invaluable to your online business success and having one done right without the other will sabotage your efforts either way.

It can seem like a lot for a business owner to handle - but fortunately, having an experienced web designer on your side to take care of managing the design and optimization right from the start will make your online sales go much more smoothly.

Here’s what you need to know to get started with SEO Web Design the right way.

1. Don’t Hire Both a Web Designer and an SEO Expert - You’re better off to find a web designer who knows how to do SEO rather than a search engine optimization firm that maybe knows a friend of a friend whose kid does web design after school. All the optimization in the world can’t help a site that’s poorly designed and difficult to navigate.

2. Make sure it’s done right - right from the start. In building an online business, web design and SEO go hand-in-hand in creating your overall “presence” online. Your site should be built to include only the most recommended search engine techniques. Don’t walk - run - whenever anyone promises they’ll design your site and submit it to 1,000 directories for some outrageous fee.

3. When in doubt - ask! Most web designers will gladly tell you what steps they plan on taking when it comes to promoting your site in the search engines, and how their design will add to - not take away - from that. Ask for specifics or clarification if you don’t understand. As designers, we’re always interested in making things easier for our clients!

4. Make a plan - Good search engine results won’t happen overnight. That’s why it’s important that you discuss a timetable and create a plan together with your designer that includes such proven SEO techniques as article writing, press release submission, blog participation and getting quality links back to your site. In time, your efforts will be rewarded with more visitors and customers.

Professional web design and a high search engine ranking are like a good soup - they take time to simmer, but the end result is so delicious, you’ll have guests coming back for seconds!

Build It and They Will Come !

Build it and they will come! Or will they? By Jaimie Dobson

In its last report on the matter the Office of National Statistics stated that Internet sales rose 29% to £130.4bn in 2006 over a 2005 figure of £101bn. That’s a big jump. No doubt the figures for 2007 will show a similar if not greater leap when they are released later this year. The ONS goes on to say that 56.3% of businesses made a purchase online during 2006. This indicates that businesses wanting to source new products or services for themselves are increasingly turning to the search-engines on the web rather than picking up a paper directory.

Most people when looking on the web for a new product or service turn to one of the top four search-engines, namely; Google, Yahoo Search, MSN or Ask to help them find it. Google which accounts for approximately 87% of the Internet searches made in the UK can be said to be the ‘search-engine of choice’ for the majority of Internet users.

Given the dominance of Google in the search engine world, it makes sense if your business maintains its own website and uses it as a promotional or sales tool, to firstly get it listed within Google’s database and then to get it placed as high as possible within its search results. This ‘placement’ process is called website ranking. Research has shown that Internet searchers rarely scroll onto page two of their given search results, so it’s important that your site is placed or ranked on the first page of Google’s results when a particular phrase is used as the search term. So for example if you are promoting “widgets for cars” on your website then to be successful your site should appear on page one of Google’s search results when the phrase “widgets for cars” is used as a search term.

The higher you get your site placed for search terms that are relevant to it, the more chance you’ll have of attracting a visitor to your site and in-turn, the more chance you will have of making a sale or generating an enquiry.

The process of preparing a website for ranking in the search-engines is called “Search Engine Optimisation” (SEO) and generally goes hand in hand with the process of “Search Engine Promotion” (SEP) which involves getting an “optimised” website included and then ranked, within the results pages of a particular search engine.

A correctly optimized website together with an effective search engine promotional strategy can pay dividends for its owner but can be time consuming and fraught with pitfalls for the unwary. However, with patience and commitment there is a lot the small business owner can do for themselves to promote their website in the search engines for very little or no cost.

To this end and through this column over the next few weeks, I’m going to look at the different aspects of search engine promotion that a business website owner can adopt for themselves in order to help them increase traffic levels to their website.

Website Design Tips and Considerations

Tuesday 8 July 2008 @ 2:07 am

by Luigi Fidele
I will be moving to another city very soon to join a multinational company and the biggest problem which I will face is healthy food. I don’t know how to cook. I talked online to a couple of people in that city and they gave me a website URL which offered food delivery to my place on per meal basis. Can you believe it? They have a website just for food delivery and we are well aware with websites related to every small item which we use regularly in our life styles. Launching a website is like launching a company. It is your office which people will use to know more about you and your work. They will contact you if that website leaves a lasting impression on them else they will leave and won’t come back. They might even negatively promote your website among their friends. You want this to happen?

Cover of the book does impact whether I buy the book or not. Similarly website design does impact whether I will come back to that website or not. It is true that I might not observe the design again when I come back but the first impression helps me judge the seriousness of the webmaster towards his business.

People might think that a flashy website can easily attract visitors but they need to understand that not everyone enjoys high speed internet connection and a flashy website might take ages to load. It is always recommended to study the audience which you are targeting before you plan to get your site custom designed.

One needs to make a note of these points so that the website relates to the audience which the webmaster is targeting:

- The kind of Internet connections which they use.

- The number of hours for which they surf Internet.

- What are their searching habits and what are the stuffs they usually look for on the Internet?

- What kind of websites are they attracted to and why?

- For how many minutes (or seconds) do they stay on some site before clicking the back button or closing the browser?

Relating to these points a website will have these features respectively:

- It will load quickly if most of the visitors have slow Internet connections.

- The amount of content/images/audio/video will depend on the number of hours people give to Internet.

- The website design will be search engine friendly (CSS and XHTML validated) and include all the related items so that users don’t have to leave the website if they want to know more. These items should be easily accessible to the users via menus or visible links.

- An experienced Internet surfer might feel easy with a flashy website boasting many features but a new user will get confused with the complex website design and hence the webmaster needs to create a website design related to the audience which the website will have.

- The landing page of the website must clearly explain the purpose of the website and it should give a clear picture to the visitor about the next step which he needs to follow. A visitor will leave the website if he faces confusions to understand the purpose of the website.

The role of colour in the World Wide Web

Tuesday 8 July 2008 @ 2:07 am

by Karra Maxim
When creating for the world wide web, an aspect of the web-site that requires painstaking attention is colour. deciding on colours absent of reasoning or knowing could discourage internet users from the website. opting for the precisecolours with reasoning and understanding could actuate to a improved web-site.

Knowing some colour psychology & symbolism is key to knowing which colours affect people in certain ways. colour perception is linked strongly to emotions & feelings including happiness, sadness & lust.

Colours can also emphasise contrast & emphasise bits of a webpage that you might want the user to see including a promotion box or a purchase button.

Here is some of the most popular colours & how they make people feel.

Red is linked to strength, fire, blood and passion. if it is used sparingly on a pale background colour, it can be used to draw attention and emphasise.

Blue is the most frequently used colour and it can denote confidence, loyalty and royalty. the darker end can mean strength whereas the lighter end can be used to represent fantasy and dream.

Green can be linked to feelings of durability, safety and harmony. it is also a perfect colour to use to emphasise calm and relaxation.

The colour red is a really evocative colour & it stirs up thoughts of hell, love, fire & warning. its probably the most effective colour to draw attention.

White can create contrast by being used as a background colour. the sections of white inbetween components of a webpage are known as negative space. White is associated with cleanliness, peace & light.

Black is a really strong colour & is associated with sexiness, strength & elegance. its a really popular colour on photography web sites, because black creates striking contrast between colours within images.

Brown can be used to convey trust and honesty in a design. it can also be linked to old age, warmth and comfort.

Orange is linked with enthusiasm, creativity and stimulation. it can be used in web-site design to denote friendliness.

Brown, especially the the lighter end of the spectrum can be very calming. Beige is also a top colour in web-site design as it provides an earthy and relaxed feel. it might also mean tradition, poverty and mother earth.

Grey can be linked to sophistication, innovation and the future. The paler side is similar to white in that it is a wonderful colour to use on the background of a website to mould a sense of space and modernism.

The role of colour is not just to make the site look nice, it can evoke feelings & emotions from the user. picking colours that annoy the end user can have damaging effects on your website, whereas cleverly choosing can mean that the website meets the user’s expectations.

How important is using the right colour in web deisgn?

Monday 7 July 2008 @ 4:07 am

One sign of a well-designed website is its colours. choice of colours is vital in creating the look that the site’s owner wants to portray. if the look of the site does not meet the user’s expectation, then they will leave and probably never return to the site. This is regularly the reason why a website is not doing quite as well as it should.

Knowing all about colour perception can make life a whole lot easier when choosing a colour scheme for a website. knowing which colours can irritate and which can calm is important in giving the user the right impression & experience of the site. why would you want to anger a user if you want them to buy from your website?

Colour contrast & balance is another technique you should know about. It can be used to point users attention to certain pages on the site.

Below are some of the best-used colours and their emotional connotations.

Yellow can be linked with hazard, hope, friendship and wealth. used sparingly, it can be used to draw attention to sections of a webpage.

Green is a great colour to use to create a relaxed and calm website, it’s linked to mother earth, envy, wealth and the organic.

Blue is associated with business, strength, water and harmony and the lighter blues could be used in designing websites to create a cool feel.

Red is a really evocative colour and it conjures up thoughts of hell, love, fire and warning. it is probably the best colour to use to draw attention.

White can be used to create contrast by being used as a background colour. the bits of white inbetween the components of a webpage are known as negative space. White is linked with cleanliness, peace and light.

Black is a bold colour and is linked with sexiness, strength and elegance. it is a really popular colour on photography sites, as black creates striking contrast between colours within images.

Grey can be linked with respect, humility, decay & boredom. its used heavily to make shiny gradients in designing web sites to give a slick, modern feel to a web-site.

Orange is strongly related to spirituality & healing. its the colour that represents Buddhism & its a calming energy about it. its a bold colour that’s not as bright as yellow yet not a deep as red.

In designing web-sites, purple is a pretty underused colour, probably because it is perceived as a girly colour. its also linked to royalty, romance & wisdom.

Grey can be a weird colour as it is not strong. it can be used to create sophisticated, classy & calm sites. its used heavily on tech sites.

Kknowing what the colours represent and the subconscious power of them can be a great benefit when designing websites. by knowing the target audience, designers can thoughtfully choose colours that connect to the user thus making the site appealing and attractive. E-commerce places could be made better by pointing the user in the direction of the buy now button by drawing attention and creating contrast.

One can use the images during presentation and extend the communication of the idea.

The different services that the team of Invent Resources does include Product Conception, 3D Computer Aided Modeling, Production Documentation, Prototyping and Manufacture.

As soon the team of Graphic Design learns about the idea, an Idea Development is done through concise design brief. It is made that is followed by the team as the project is started. The different factors involved in the Product Design of the brief include target market, manufacturing ease and the ergonomics. During the concept phase, different concept proposals are presented that are understood by all the parties involved. They also visualize the idea and help in the full development of the product.

These include the conventional model making services to rapid prototyping technologies, which includes 3D printing, CNC machining, Stereo Lithography and Silicon molding.

Rapid prototyping is widely used for testing before manufacturing as well as for marketing, before the launch of the product. Documentation is another important part in the process. One of the elements of documentation is Production drawing. The CAM software is used to create drawings of the manufacturing standards. These drawings are sent to the manufacturers to get the cost and other details. Some other documentation that is available during this stage are internal components, surface finishes, material selection and color samples.

What A Drupal Designer Can Do For You

Saturday 5 July 2008 @ 5:07 am

by S. Reeves
There is a lot that a Drupal web designer can do for you and your website. A Drupal designer gives you all the additional expertise and access to the best the popular content management system has to offer.

The Cost Of Free Programming

The Drupal CMS may be free, but if you do not have the time or skill to devote to it, you may cost yourself more in the long run. Even those who do know how to implement installations to run a Drupal site often defer to the expertise of a true Drupal expert. There is more that a Drupal designer can offer that can’t be achieved with a simple cut and paste.

What many people fail to consider when building a Drupal site without securing the services of professionals are the finer points of web design. They look to function, without always attending to the finer nuances of form and aesthetics, or to navigability and search engine optimization, all integral parts of a complete website design. In the end, business and/or function is often lost because the visitors that do get to the Drupal site (if they do…) have a hard time using the site in the way it was intended. Frustration quickly leads to loss of visitors, participation, and conversions.

Do More With A Drupal Web Designer

When you work with a professional Drupal designer on Drupal site development, you build in a system of reliability and guarantee—guarantee that you have done what it takes to build the site right from the bottom up, and the guarantee of reliability that only comes with professional support. By working with an expert Drupal web designer, you attend to more difficult aspects of website design like:

•Graphic design; while you may technically have the knowledge to change Drupal site designs, you may lack the skills and ‘eye’ of a professional designer. The graphic design and aesthetics of a site are very important to create a fresh, appealing, yet still functional and user-friendly website. Work with a designer who is also an expert Drupal web designer and you will have the best of both worlds.
•Ecommerce and security; your chosen Drupal expert will offer additional knowledge and expertise that will ensure the usability of your site for ecommerce, and ensure that security protocols are in place to make Drupal ecommerce safe for you and your clientele.
•Drupal web hosting services; because Drupal and it modules require more space; an effective design requires that your Drupal web hosting needs have been attended to.Many Drupal designers offer this as an additional service. When you manage Drupal web hosting services through your designer, you can be sure they will secure the space and reliability that you need to keep your website always on.
•Drupal customization; the flexibility of Drupal relies on customizing your website with the many available modules and on customizing the code for your own personal benefit. While many people can manage building a basic Drupal site, customizing a site for maximum performance is something beyond the novice site builder. For a customized website, you’ll need the help of someone with advanced programming knowledge.

You can build a basic Drupal site with limited function without programming experience in many cases. But when the functionality, personality, and reliability of your website matters, it is well worth your investment to do it right and secure the services of a valuable Drupal designer.
