What You Want From Professional SEO Companies

Wednesday 3 September 2008 @ 5:09 pm

by Bhatt Bijoy
Most folks are admittedly not ready to do their own SEO. People would rather focus on spicing up a site’s topics and reviews or appearance, than learning the tricky tools of SEO. The good thing however is that you can hire someone else to do it, but be on the lookout for scam artists and sub-par SEO “experts”.

The art of SEO is basically an open and shut case, either it achieves pre-set objectives or it does not.

If it does not, the SEO process has failed. If it works, the optimization method has worked. The objectives could, and probably would involve achieving certain ranking positions on a particular search engine in a stated time. Achieving this may sound easy, however one needs to consider the environment in which SEO professionals work, and that is the search engines.

SEO and Search Engines

Search engines at present are a lucrative billion-dollar business. With over an estimated billion searches made every day using the search engines, search engines take their roles very seriously. The main reason why users come is to search and attain relevant results, and each of the major search engines long for a bigger slice of the growing market, which means gaining more users.

However, it is important to note that search engines sometimes do not mind a sites’ ranking, as long as they got to that position “organically.” If the site tries to rank via some other methods, like spamming and is discovered, the site is likely to be de-listed. Also, one good thing to remember is that search engines regularly change their covert ranking algorithms, and this makes SEO an unclear and indefinite science. This reason actually justifies the need for you to have an SEO professional working on your site.

How to Pick an SEO Professional

Basically, no degrees are required in Search Engine Optimization; however there are accreditations from groups like SEMPO and Bruceclay for example. There are courses in Search marketing offered in schools world wide, in US and European colleges. The art of Search Engine Optimization requires a range of skills from the hard (technical) to the soft, or people skills and “spin” marketing. Before signing up for a particular SEO professional or firm, check on some important details.

Analyze the SEO company. Read through the company website. Does the site list exact goals and techniques? Does it discuss using ethical, or white hat SEO methods?. Does it stir confidence, or do the experts sound like shrewd salesmen?. Check the company domain for example; click to see their whois details, how long has the domain been registered for?, does the company list complete and accurate whois details?, However, if the domain is new, or if the whois details aren’t listed, you may be looking at a suspicious company.

So how should you choose a professional SEO Company? The truth is that there are very few excellent SEO firms but there are tens of thousands of SEO companies that advertise their quality services, which could be poor or highly questionable. The SEO market is an unregulated and relatively new sector in considerable demand, so it is not so surprising for scam artists to be around. Try sorting out firms on the Web carefully, or better get a list from industry and government Web watchdogs for a safer search.

Get Tons of Free Organic Google Traffic!

Wednesday 3 September 2008 @ 4:09 pm

by William Lund
There are no secrets to getting plenty of free search engine traffic. Provide what people are searching for in the form of high quality content, and lots of it. The old saying that content is king is still true. You do need high quality content, and content that people are searching for. Fortunately there are ways to find out what it is people are searching for, and we can briefly examine them.

After you’ve chosen a topic, hopefully a topic that a lot of people are interested in, you will need to find out exactly what key words and key word phrases people use when searching for information about your topic. This can be done with one of several keyword tools that are available online. By using the keyword tools you can find out what groups of words are really used by searchers, and which ones are wastes of time. If no one searches for a phrase, then ranking number one on Google for that phrase won’t do you a bit of good. The keyword research tools provide you with all kinds of ways of finding out what key words to optimize for and they even tell you how hard it will be to achieve a high ranking in the search engines with a particular word or phrase.

Before we get any further I would like to point out that the goal of the search engines is to find the most relevant results of the search for the HUMAN doing the search. The search engines are pretty smart, and getting smarter all the time. They are looking for high quality content, but even the best search engine software cannot determine easily whether content is of high quality nor not. However there are clues and things the search engines can base decisions about the quality of the content on, both on the page and off.

For instance, the engines can determine that the text has a large number of spelling errors, something you would not expect to find with great content. Even grammar and punctuation can be taken into consideration.

Search engines cannot read images. To get the attention of the engines you need text, and lots of it. I like to use 500 to 800 words per web page. The more pages the better. Each page should be optimized for two or three keyword phrases. It’s very important to write for humans, not for search engines…they can tell the difference. Make sure you run your work through a spell checker, and better yet, a word processor that will check your grammar as well. And don’t forget to check the punctuation. If, in the eyes of the search engines, two sites have nearly identical quality scores and one has poor grammar or punctuation and the other doesn’t, then guess who gets the higher ranking.

Keep it simple! I’m sure there are a lot of great sites with great content and high rankings that are not simple. But unless you are into that stuff there is no need. Chances are a human searching for information about a topic would prefer a simple site that is easy to navigate, easy to read, and easy to locate the desired information on, than a fancy sight with lots of graphics and or flash etc.

Use a logical linking scheme for your site’s internal links. The engines will be examining your links for clues about which pages are the most important and what your topic is. They must also be able to follow the links if you want your pages listed in the search engine results. Put some of your keywords in the link text, and in the text surrounding the link. But don’t get crazy, just a light sprinkling of key word phrases will do the trick.

Avoid using single-word keywords. Not only is it easier to get good rankings for multiple word keyword phrases, the traffic you get will be more tightly targeted and you should therefore get more sales or signups or whatever the goal of your site is.

Make use of the bold and heading tags to present a hierarchy of the importance of your content to the engines.

Avoid cluttering up your pages with advertisements and links. Page clutter is something the engines can determine. They can look at the ratio of ad links to text, total number of links, graphics placements, what is above the fold on a page, and lots more. This is another reason to keep your pages and navigation clean and simple. Oh yeah, humans like clean and simple too.

Include a few images and work some keywords into the image alt tags. Some of my sites get a surprising amount of traffic from Google’s image search. So put text in the alt image tag that is related to the picture, perhaps get it into the file name for the image, and in some nearby text, which can help Google figure out what the image is about.

Once you have your high quality content in place with your simple and straight forward site navigation worked out, it’s time to look at what you can do to obtain some good links to your site from other quality sites. After all, there could be thousands of pages of pretty much identical information about any given topic online, and how is a search engine to figure out which is the best? One way is to evaluate the quantity and quality of incoming links to your site from other sites.

High quality content will attract some links, but if you actively seek out links from other quality sites you can speed things up. Avoid linking with large numbers of sites in a short amount of time, like what happens when you join a link farm. Google prefers to see a slow steady increase in links as though it were a natural human endeavor. If a huge number of links pops up overnight Google doesn’t count them as very important. The same is true if huge numbers of links have identical link text. Google will take note and reduce their value.

The more pages you have, the better your chances of being included in the search results from those billions of daily searches, and thus the more traffic you will receive. It’s all just a numbers game.

Once you have all of that stuff in place, then you have to wait. Typically with a new site, you may get a little initial activity through Google for a few weeks, then you will drop off the map for up to a year with Google. That is what is known as being in Google’s sand box. After a year or so your site will start being listed in the search results and things will start looking up.

Get online and investigate those keyword tools so you can choose a great niche topic for your next website.

Choosing Keywords For Your Website

Wednesday 3 September 2008 @ 11:09 am

by Audrey Okaneko
I want to share a story. Last week I became aware that I was out of return address labels. Instead of waiting until Sundays paper came and grabbing the insert offering this item, I decided to look online and find return address labels.

I went to Google and did a search for “return address labels”. I clicked on the very first site listed. When I got there, I had no idea from their front page what they were selling. I scanned the page, did not see return address labels and so returned to Google. In order for this site to have been number one on Google, they had to have used “return address labels” somewhere in their site, but their front page did not have these 3 words listed there. Back on Google, I clicked on the link to the right, figuring someone paid money to be listed there. What I was looking for was the cheap 500 to a roll return address labels. When I got to this new site, the site someone paid to have listed under “return address labels” they had 6 pictures on the front page, all very fancy labels and quite pricy for what I was seeking. I did a quick scan of the page and did not see where I should click to find just inexpensive rolls of labels. Once again, I left the site.

So, it was back to Google, where I finally clicked on a page half way down the page, listed about 50 on Google and right there on the front page, I saw exactly what I wanted. I placed the order.

While it’s wonderful to have your page on top, to be number one, if you don’t have what the customer wants, they will click off. One thousand hits with no sales defeats the purpose of driving traffic to your website. Traffic does not equal sales. That site with the 6 photos would have done better to select a niche market and optimize for those keywords versus a generic “return address labels”

Choosing your keywords is important. Make choices that truly reflect what you are offering. Remember you can select different keywords for every page on your site. Choose the words that best suit the one page you are working on.

What Are Article Sites?

Wednesday 3 September 2008 @ 10:09 am

by Steve Evans
Article sites is the term used by internet marketers when referring to free article directories. In this respect the word “free” means, free to use the articles unchanged in your own ezines and web pages as long as you publish the article in its entirety, and also preserve the full linking within each article. You should always read the terms of use of each directory, but that in essence is the core philosophy and reason for existence of so called “articles sites”.

Posting your articles to “articles sites “is great for gaining backlinks and traffic, and it is a good ideas to always Submit your articles to several directories. Then several weeks later, check your web site reports to see if the URLs for any of the directories are showing up as “referrers”. Some directories are better than others at delivering direct traffic. Submit to the right websites and start seeing traffic almost immediately.

So, article directories are websites that house free articles, and these articles are usually put there by whoever owns the copyright to them as a promotion method. Authors retain first rights and they still retain ownership to all the articles placed on article directories or banks. Some article bank sites publish e-zines themselves that include recently submitted articles. Still more run ad-swap requests and provide an “articles wanted” area, too.

Look out for author resource box links that will allow you to put your site links with targeted anchor text, also known as keywords. If a particular article site does not allow you to place site links thens imply move on to the next.

People who use the Internet to find products, services and information are always looking for authority figures that they can trust to deliver the right information to them. People like to buy from someone who knows what they are doing. Writing articles lets customers know the business owner is doing more than selling a product, they are selling a product they understand and believe in. Enhance this effect by providing a comprehensive profile where you say something about yourself. It goes without saying that it is also well worthwhile uploading an image of yourself for the same reason.

Despite the good news about article sites, which I have related in this article, web masters do tend to have a love-hate relationship with article submission. Some dread article submission due to the tedium of entering all the necessary details into multiple sites. However, most web masters still force themselves to do so because article marketing is so effective in driving targeted traffic to their websites.

Article site owners are starting to realize that in order to get quality articles they need to do one very important thing themselves. This is to get the page rank of the article directory high enough that quality authors will be eager to post with them. This should not be difficult with some basic advertising, after all, article directories are teeming with fresh content everyday, and they are constantly updated.

Nevertheless, they will still need work done on them by the article poster, and most people do not realise this. This is, for each article page, the person who posts the article will gain an unfair advantage over most of his/her competitors if he provides one or more direct backlinks pointing into each of his/her articles to get the page registered and eventually ranked.

If when you post each time you should also create at least one backlink to that post, and your article posting efforts will have much more traffic and ranking success.

Steve Evans has a great article directory for you to use. All posters also receive half of all the Adsense revenue on their pages. He says that Free Articles Pay! In addition here is a leading blog for more marketing tips: Newsletter Europa.

How To Earn More With Long Tail Keywords

Tuesday 2 September 2008 @ 5:09 pm

by Margaret Tye
Have you built a great website but nobody is coming to visit? Many people are looking to make an income on the internet, but cannot understand why they are not getting traffic. This is where long tail keywords are so important. A few years ago a good site with a prominent main keyword was all that was needed, but not any longer. In those days you may have been competing with a few thousand other sites, now it could be a few million. That does not mean that you cannot succeed, after all millions of new people are coming online each year, so even though the competition may have increased, so has your possible traffic, if only you can reach them.

Long tail keywords are nearly always 2-4 word phrases related to your main topic, but narrow and specific. Try typing “Windows Vista” into a search engine, it will return about 190 million sites, but if you type “Windows Vista software”, only 2-3 million sites are returned. This is an extreme example and “Windows Vista software” could never be described as a long tail phrase, but it does show how, by using more specific keywords you can cut the competition and improve your chances. It is easier to rank on the first pages of a search engine and get traffic with long tail phrases, than popular phrases.

One big advantage of using a long tail keyword is that you are likely to provide exactly the information the searcher is looking for and if you are supplying a product the potential for a sale is much greater.

Long tail keywords will not have has many searches as the more popular keyword and this is where thorough research is required. You should be looking for phrases that have a reasonable number of searches and very little competition from other sites.
There are a number of software programs you can use to find long tail keywords. Wordtracker, Nichebot or Keyword Elite are all good. Some you buy outright, others have a monthly subscription. If you are just starting out and cannot afford any of these programs then Google’s keyword tool will give you a list of keywords associated with a popular keyword and a guide to number of searches and competition.

So if you are having trouble getting traffic, stop trying to compete with the big boys and find some good long tail keywords, there’s plenty left if you just look for them.

Top Link Building Strategies and Types of Links

Tuesday 2 September 2008 @ 4:09 pm

by Priyanka
Most of the major search engines now factor Link Popularity into their relevancy algorithms. As a result, increasing the number of quality, relevant sites which link to your site can improve your search engine rankings but there is still no one trick to get good rankings, but boosting your site’s popularity may give it the edge it needs.

Starting from searching you must take a topic relevant to you subject. Starting at this level gives us hundreds of thousands, if not millions of sites to start to filter from (not to mention the backlinks of those sites), and sites that share similar themes. People use different strategies to come on the top but they are not aware of the actual strategies by which the can reach on top. Here are some of the Top link building strategies that will make surely win -

1. Authority links: Obtaining this type of link, Start with your related category in the Google Directory. For this Start looking for top ranking sites related to you topic, Sites that currently offer links out, Sites that would benefit from offering users your content

Authority links are an absolute must for improving your trust score these days. This is a MUST for a new site, and should be where you start your efforts, and always be dedicating SOME time. Take out time to get some quality links. Find out a way — How you can get those links? - Buy, borrow, beg, and barter.

2. Directory links: Obtaining this type of link, you must Pony up some cash. For this Start looking for easy to find niche directories, don’t go overboard with more than a few directories per month, quarter, etc.

Too many directories triggers a filter. I wouldn’t go over 10% of my total link ratio on my own sites at any given time. Start with a few highly trusted directories (Yahoo, MSN etc), and add some others after you have many more links added to your profile.

3. Reciprocal links: Make some friends but never try to go overboard. Start looking for Strong links that are complementary to your site. Reciprocal links are NOT dead. They are not a magic bullet anymore, but they do occur naturally. Use them to your advantage but don’t get carried away. I would say under 10% of most sites links should be reciprocal - make them count.

4. One way links: Go to conferences and tradeshows, e-mail folks and make friends, offer something useful in return. Don’t link ALL your sites together and stay on topic.

5. Edu and Gov links: Be nice to future interns. Offer some career assistance or advice. Look for .edu’s and .gov sites. There are plenty of ways to encourage .edu and .gov folks to link to you (mainly good content or resources).

6. Press release links: Find sites that offer press release submission services and submit your NEWS (this does not mean any crap you just want to link stuff). Look for people in your niche who want news as content. Example PR.com, PRWeb.com, and many more. Press releases are generally NOT a great way to get links, but you can pick up some that may be of value. Every little bit helps, and remember this is only a small part of your overall link profile.

7. Article bio links: Write few articles, or have some written for you. Look for industry authority sites that accept submissions from guest writers. This can be a GREAT way to get some good authority links from high profile sites. They’ll appreciate or even demand great content in return for the exposure and link pop you’ll receive. The better the site is, the higher quality content they will require.

8. RSS/ Blog aggregated links: It’s pretty easy, start your blog and aggregate - also known as scraper links. Look for Blog and RSS directories to submit to, and tagging sites. Not worth a whole lot, but you’ll pick up a whole bunch of links this way. There are, however, plenty of legitimate sites that aggregate content where you may pick up some decent links.

Balance is the key term in a link profile. If you tip the scales too far on near any type of link you are going to set off alarm bells to the algo’s. Use all the tools at your disposal to achieve balance in your link equation.

The SEO Necessary for a Site

Tuesday 2 September 2008 @ 3:09 pm

by Vinodd Kumarr
Search Engine Optimization has brought a revolution in this internet age. Internet itself is a strong tool for development and with SEO in its side there is no stopping further. Search engines have now become the whole and soul of the internet. Therefore it is quite understood that every thing on the internet will get associated with it. In today‘s age it is not quite possible to know each and everything. There are lot of information‘s which are found over the net. For this sake either you will have to either know the exact website where you will find the information or have to take recourse to reading books from book stores.

However with search engines you will have to do neither of them. With search engines you can get information regarding anything in this earth. As the name itself suggests it means optimizing the search engine so that you get the best possible results and sites in which you will find your information. Now it is quite probable and obvious too that your information will be featured in thousands of websites across the internet. Now the question arises that what can be done so that our website is featured in the first page of the search engine results. This explains to some extent why SEO is actually needed for a site. Firstly you need proper SEO measures so as to increase the quantity of the web traffic to your site. Search engine results basically depend on the keywords that you enter. So if that particular keyword is featured number of times and in a unique manner then your site has the highest probability of getting displayed in the search engine results.

Though there are various advantages of search engines there are some disadvantages too. It is quite evidently found that almost 95% of the people surfing the net don‘t go beyond the first page of the search engine. Well that doesn‘t seem a disadvantage for the one who is making a search but a big disadvantage for those who own the websites and depend upon the web traffic. Here some the role of Search Engine Optimisation. As the name itself suggests it means optimizing the search engine so that you get the best possible results and sites in which you will find your information. Now it is quite probable and obvious too that your information will be featured in thousands of websites across the internet. Six Simple SEO Techniques to Improve your Search Engine Ranking

Tuesday 2 September 2008 @ 3:09 pm

by
There are some very simple SEO techniques available for you to improve your search engine ranking. In the course of my normal analysis of competitors’ websites, I find an amazing number that does not employ all of these techniques, yet every one can help you get closer to that coveted #1 position.

Using these will not in itself allow you reach the top position for your keyword, but they definitely help, and there is no single factor that will enable you to hit the top. A #1 position on Google is attained by a combination of many factors, such as internal and external linking strategies, relevance of your content to the keyword and the overall look and feel of your site. Plus those detailed below.

So let’s get started on these: these are the nuts and bolts of SEO, and if they are not right then you are starting off on the back foot. These are the essential SEO techniques that you must have as a minimum if you want to improve your search engine ranking, and although intended mainly for beginners, many established web pages do not contain every one of these.

I write ‘pages’ deliberately, because Google and the other main search engines list web pages, and not entire domains. That means that every single page in your website should be optimized in the same way: each should contain every single one of the SEO techniques listed below.

TITLE TAG

The title tag is contained within the ‘HEAD’ tags of your HTML, before the ‘BODY’ tags. This states the title of the page, and must contain the major keywords of the page. The contents of your title tag do not appear in the text of the page: its purpose is to inform the search engine spiders what the topic of your page is, and what words are important (i.e. your main page keyword). For example, the TITLE tag of a page based on this article would be “SEO Techniques - Improve your Search Engine Ranking”.

DESCRIPTION TAG

The description Meta tag is used by Google, and other search engines, in the search engine listings. I have tested this with them all and Google uses it as is, while Yahoo uses part of it. You should provide a description of what the web page is about, and a simple check of the descriptions in other sites using your keyword on Google will show you how many words you can use to have the whole description included. About 20 words are fine.

KEYWORD TAG

Search engines rarely use the keyword Meta tag: Google ignores it completely. However, it doesn’t hurt, and can help in a small way. Include your brand name and your own name. That way some engines might show your pages if somebody is looking for your name. The other Meta tags have no SEO value, and do not help to improve your search engine ranking whatsoever.

HEADING H TAGS

Heading tags (H1, H2, . . .) are used by Google to determine the importance of the text contained in your headings. Use H1 tags for the main title of your page (you also use it in the TITLE tag, but that isn’t seen by readers, only by the spiders). Put subtitles in H2 tags. You can change the font size of the text within these tags.

TEXT FORMATTING

Text in bold, italics and underscored are seen by the search engines as having greater weight, and so will be used in determining the relevance of your site. Always bolden your titles, and it also helps to underline it if it doesn’t make it look out of place.

WRITING STYLE and CONTENT

Do not write for algorithms (spiders): write for your readers. Always write for humans and you won’t go wrong. If your page content reads well, and has good vocabulary relating to the topic, then it will have a better chance of a higher listing than if you stuffed it full of keywords. I rarely use more than 1.5% - the keyword densities of the terms ‘SEO’, SEO techniques’ and ’search engine ranking’ (the main keywords) of this article are 1.5, 0.87 and 0.87 respectively. Too many keywords is bad SEO, and could result in a poor listing for your page - if it is listed at all.

So there you are: six simple SEO techniques to improve your search engine ranking. It is surprising how many experienced webmasters fail to apply all of these: there is no excuse, and they are failing to get the nuts and bolts properly fitted and tightened on their web pages.

Apply these to every page and not only will you improve your SEO, but also your chances of a good search engine ranking. It is amazing how many web pages lack these basic SEO techniques.

If you would like more advanced SEO techniques to help improve your search engine ranking considerably, check out SEOcious where Pete show you screenshots of how got two of his sites listed at #1 in the main search engines against strong competition.

Video Marketing How to Win on YouTube with Mike Hobbs

Tuesday 2 September 2008 @ 2:09 pm

by Mike Hobbs
Content used to be enough to help you generate endless amounts of leads and traffic to your web site. While content still plays a vital role in the type of success you have online, Mike Hobbs says it is video marketing that is beginning to take the internet by storm. And if you have not yet taken advantage of what this form of marketing has to offer, you are missing out.

With the competition on the internet as stiff as ever, it is crucial you take advantage of any opportunity you can to separate yourself from the rest of the herd. Video marketing is the latest way for entrepreneurs to do so as it is a new and powerful method for you to reel in endless amounts of traffic.

Everyone learns and takes in information differently. For this very reason, you cannot settle on just content. You have to give visual learners a way to take in the information you want to promote. Using videos gives you the chance to show off your products, explain the benefits of them visually, and show them the type of person you are.

Video marketing is one of many web 2.0 advertising techniques that internet marketers are applying to their advertising scheme. The whole goal is to connect with each visitor, prospect or customer on a whole new level. And having a video of you and your company allows you to do this.

If you think about it, you have much more of an affect on people if you post in forums as oppose to posting a banner. The same can be said about you explaining the benefits in content versus explaining them on video. They can actually see your emotions and how much you truly care about them as oppose to just making another sell.

When implementing this form of advertising into your business strategy, there are a few things you want to keep in mind according to Mike Hobbs. First, it is vital you speak in a professional manner while explaining all of the details and benefits to what you have to offer.

Next, do not be afraid to show your passion and desire for what you are offering. People are much more likely to buy from someone that cares about what they are offering over someone that is going through the motions. Have a sense of urgency and let them know you care about them.

Lastly, make sure your video is professional looking and in a professional setting. YouTube is a great way to feed your video marketing on the internet. When filming, have nice lighting and a quiet location so you can get your point across.

Ever since YouTube, video marketing has given internet marketers a whole new way to promote their products and web site. If you have not yet applied this marketing technique to your business, you are losing ground on your competitors.
