Building a successful Internet business can seem a maddening slow and agonizing process. Is it really? Well yes and no.

If you fall into the “yes” category of thinking a successful Internet business creation is a slow and difficult process, you no doubt suffer from a common problem the majority of beginners have.

Too many of you severely underestimate how much work is required in order to succeed.

Here is just one example:

A person who was struggling with getting traffic to her site wrote to me. Her niche was too competitive to expect much traffic from Google. Therefore, she was using article marketing to drive traffic. Submitting articles is a valid method; it works well for many people. She was on track I thought to myself!

She told me it was not working well for her however. She said she had a handful of articles up on EzineArticles and was getting traffic, but not much. I tried raising my voice a bit while I typed my response (in a nice way of course). “A handful of articles”! My-oh-my! Article marketing is a tried and proven. However, if it is your main method for driving traffic to your site, more than just a “hand full” of articles is required. I am talking 4 or 5 a day…and more on good days!

Once she had many hundreds of well optimized articles out there and still had major traffic problems, then she could be concerned.

Did I say many hundreds? Does that shock you? If it does, then you are one of those who are underestimating the process required. Although I used article marketing as an example, the same idea carries over to every other area as well.

My point is that a LOT of work is required. Most of us don’t write 4 or 5 articles a day for the article directories. Most of us spread our efforts across multiple traffic generating methods. IF article marketing is your only method, it really will take that much effort to see results for your Internet business. Now carry that thought over to your own chosen methods.

The beginners who get discouraged and quit (about 95% of everyone who tries Internet marketing) simply never get past the mindset of, “it surely must be easier somehow”. Every beginner starts this process with wild eyed dreams of almost instant online riches. Yes, I was included in that group too! We all tried to find that magical shortcut; the one which guaranteed hundreds of dollars of income daily for an hour of work. Remember those days?

The frustration brought on by lack of results can be a real motivation killer. It’s tough to keep going when you expected to see bank deposits already! Success for a beginner requires the realization of just how much work is required. When one’s thinking progresses to that level, putting in the effort required becomes far easier.

If working most nights and weekends for as long as it takes to realize your dream sounds like “too much work”, I am afraid you are soon to be in that 95% category I mentioned above.

When you are first starting out and you need to get as much information as possible about how to make money online, your wallet starts emptying faster than the speed of boxes of pop tarts at Brangelinas’s breakfast table.

Imagine internet marketing is like the Amazon - it’s a huge river and it’s full of piranhas voraciously feeding from your pound of flesh. There’s bait upon bait the piranhas have ingeniously got ready for us - this bait is basically made up of all the same components as all the others but us newbies have to devour all of them! Us little fish frantically search around continuously for this food whilst the piranhas are busy providing the bait and biting off chunks of our wallets as we frantically belly-flop by. What the heck am I getting at? Cause this silly fish metaphor is getting out of hand.

Well once you’ve found the information you need - use it before you get seduced into buying the next “best thing” in the genre! That’s the key. Start doing instead if relentlessly trying to find out how how how all the time! When you’ve made an investment in what you believe to be a very good product - use the information in your business!

Don’t get on that “what else is there?” greyhound bus to skid row.

Easier said than done I know. But the only way you really learn is to do. Even when you make mistakes you are learning. Don’t be fooled by the spiel “I made x amount of mistakes but let me show you the correct way so you don’t have to!” Do you know how many “correct ways” there are out there on any given IM subject? Go to any IM forum and watch the big honchos argue away at the nuts and bolts. The thing is if you are determined enough yourself to succeed, focus and do the do, all you need is to follow one mentor/guru/system and you will get there.

Now how do you find that great product/mentor/guru? Well, once you have found something you might be interested in buying or subscribing to it’s a good idea to check out the IM forums. You can find some good product reviews as other buyers have gone out and already bought and left comments about the pros and cons also at places like The Warrior Forum you will get special offer invites and you can contact the creators involved and ask them questions. Try and hook up with someone higher up than you on the IM greasy pole and get their advice on what product/system/mentor helped them. If you like the sound of what a fellow IM is recommending and you trust that person then follow through buy it but then stay with the program!

Don’t get bored after a week and look for some other pathway. IM is labour intensive to start - you have to put some work in if you really want to start earning, it does not come from buying one new “blueprint”after another - Don’t end up mere meat for the piranhas - when you can be a shark!

My cell phone quit working last night. So I found myself spending Saturday night with what seemed to be half the town at the cell phone store.

What I encountered there was a surprisingly hostile crowd. I overheard complaints about repair prices and wait times, witnessed bickering among customers about who should be standing where, and found myself inconveniently placed next to a man who was demanding to see camera footage to prove he hadn’t been in the store on an earlier day.

There was nothing particularly bad about my visit to the store. I had to wait longer than was convenient, but the store appeared to be fully staffed and running as efficiently as possible. The sales associate that helped me was knowledgeable and friendly.

Yet, as I continued to witness the discontent around me, and as another customer attempted to engage me in complaining, I found myself getting frustrated and irritable like the other patrons.

I couldn’t identify any basis for my change in attitude. Clearly, the hostility of the atmosphere was sucking me in. Because my work on personal values development made me conscious of it, I was able to pull myself up and maintain a pleasant and positive mental attitude. But truly, it was work.

And truly, it will be work for you to maintain a positive attitude when getting your home based business off the ground. That’s why you must have a solid start on your personal values development before you worry about how to HTML and FTP, and what your Cpanel is.

It all goes back to the fact that your work at home business success is 90% dependent on your mindset. And the beauty of it is that your mindset, your attitude, is 100% within your control.

At the cell phone store, I could have bought into the negative atmosphere and become completely frustrated with my visit there. What purpose would this have served me?

Once you allow something to put you into a bad mood, it has a compounding effect. Think about the times that you’ve had a bad day. Generally, whether you recognize it or not, you let one thing negatively affect you and after that everything else just seems to go wrong that day. It’s not that you’re just completely unlucky and the victim of the universe’s bad fortunes that day. Rather, it’s that everything you encounter is colored by your mindset — which is, “I’m having a bad day.” Others who have the misfortune of encountering you on one of these days may ask you if you “woke up on the wrong side of the bed.”

Students of personal values development don’t have bad days. It’s not part of their mindset. They know that no matter what the challenge, how they react is totally and exclusively within their control. And they chose to react by seeing the positive in things; by turning apparent defeat into new success.

Personal values development is essential to the success of your home based business for many reasons. Most importantly, you must learn how to overcome the “minimum mentality,” and adopt the “millionaire mentality” to really get somewhere with your business. I’ll go into detail about these mentalities next time.

At least 97% of the people in this country have the minimum mentality. These are all the people that caution you against those “work from home scams,” or “pyramid schemes.” These are the people who fill you with stories of their uncle Joe who failed at his home based business. They are even those people who, as they encourage you, are giving you that “how naive that you’re trying that, you’ll quit within six months” smile at the same time. These are the people who — like most of the people in my previous life — will share your desire for financial success and time freedom, but will never take any action to make it happen, out of belief that it won’t happen.

If you want to begin to succeed in your home based business, you’ve got to get away from these people. Or, at the very least, limit your time with the minimum mentality folks and form friendships and business relationships with the millionaire mentality crowd. This can be easier said than done, especially considering that — at most — that crowd consists of only 3% of the people.
