How to determine if a potential web design company is an “expert.”

It’s been said you aren’t really an expert on a topic until you can write about that topic so that everyone can understand it. Just think about it a second…if you can’t explain a topic to a lay-person without resorting to a bunch of techno-jargon, then the field is probably still somewhat abstract to you…therefore you are not an expert. Let’s apply this principle to check whether a potential web designer is an expert.

Ok. So you’ve created a “short list” of potential web designers to design your website. Hopefully you’ve checked their home page (and portfolio) for conforming to valid web standards using http://validator.w3.org, tested their portfolio in a few different web browsers, and most importantly didn’t use the “lowest bidder” philosophy (since this will probably cost you much more later).

Now give these web designers a test to see if they truely are “experts.” Pick some feature of what you want in your web design, and ask them to write you an email explaining how they intend to implement the feature. Be honest…tell them up front that you want to understand how they will implement the feature.

Some web designers may refuse the idea right away. They are the “expert”…how dare you ask them to explain their actions! Others will ask charge you a bit for it (you are taking up their time you know), however it would be money well spent to eliminate the wannabies.

Remember the idea here is that you should understand how they are going to implement this feature. If their explanation is filled with “Coldfusion” this; and “client-side script” that; and “polymorphism” some other thing; then you probably aren’t dealing with an expert. If on the other hand, you receive a detailed explanation without a bunch of “techno-babble” then you have probably found yourself an expert. Basically, the one with the clearest, most detailed explanation knows that topic.

1. Basing your Decision on Price Alone

Price is always an important factor when choosing any product or service. For those who are not familiar with web design companies and don’t know what questions to ask, often the default is to choose the lowest bidder and this could be a serious error. It is very likely in the technology field to run into problems when awarding jobs to the lowest bidder. Web developers who quote low prices are usually taking some kind of short cut in their development. Some shortcuts are the omission of statistics or the use of template style designs. Although some templates look reasonably good, if your web developer has done work for other companies, even your competitors, your sites may come across with striking similarities. Once your site is completed you may notice new sites popping up in your community designed by that developer with the same template. In the end, you need to evaluate the price/ performance proposition and ask yourself if you really want the lowest bidder building what could be your most visible marketing tool.

2. Get Someone who can Provide Ongoing Support

Many business’s web sites contain information or material that is incorrect, obsolete, or just plain out of date. Some web developers will move onto their next project and forget about your site’s existence leaving you with no human support for future changes. Be sure that your web developer will look after all aspects of your website; a single call or email is all you should have to do to get what you need.

3. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Statistics

Make sure your web developer will provide you with detailed, real-time web statistics. Some developers may provide basic hit counters, or worse, no statistics at all. As the owner of the web site you need to see your web site’s statistics to measure its effectiveness and make changes as necessary. Be sure that you have access to traffic, and detailed statistical information. Knowing which pages on your site get the most visits, how long visitors spend on each, which search engine sent them to you and where they can from are just a few of the tools that will enable you to periodically fine tune your web site for better results. Also, you should never have to rely on a web developer to send you reports - be sure you have online access to this anytime you want. Ask in advance if it is free with the web site or an additional cost or monthly fee. You wouldn’t drive your car without a dash board — don’t try it with your web site either.

4. Insist on Formal Training and Experience

Your developer needs to understand design aspects and accessibility issues. This comes directly from having proper experience and training. Ensure they have the required knowledge of web programming to build custom applications from basic to advanced as your business grows. Database security and integration is essential when storing sensitive information on your website. Your developer should always keep up-to-date with upcoming technologies and programs.

5. Overlooking the Possible Need for Scalability

One major downfall of sites created by amateurs is the lack of scalability. At some point you’ll need new features added to your site. Not only will it make your site more profitable, but it will make your job, and your staff members’ jobs less time consuming as you begin automating tasks within a web environment. When the time comes to expand, your site will need to be scrapped and a new one created. This is one of those “pay me now or pay me later” situations.

6. Mistaking a Directory Listing for a Web Presence

Many business owners have a vague understanding of the Internet and how it works. Web directory listings may seem like an appealing, inexpensive solution to business owners who are not familiar with Internet marketing. A web directory listing is a web page within a larger web site. Capabilities on a directory listing site is minimal if any. Some will provide only basic company information and not much beyond that. Future development would be nearly impossible without switching to a real web developer. 7. Be Sure You Can Pick Up and Move if You Want

Some web designers lock you in with them for the duration of your site. This is ethically and morally wrong. Always retain the rights to your domain name and have access to your registration information. 8. You Should Need Only One Number to Call For Any Problem

Having a web design company who will look after all aspects of your website will save you time, money and headaches. If you have any problems it’s best to have one number to call for a solution and only one number. You don’t ever want to find yourself managing an issue among various service providers, especially when the technical issues become complex. It is very easy for a developer to say “oh no - that’s not my problem, you need to talk to your web host, or your internet service provider, or your domain registrar”. Have a single person who knows what they are doing and willing to be accountable and solve your problem, even if they need to deal with a third party regarding the issue. At least you know you will be looked after with only one phone call on your part.

7 Golden Rules of Online Customer Service

How do you treat the people with whom you do business? Many times what we forget in this online world where so much of our customer service is automated is that, in the end, we’re still doing business with other people. Do your customer service procedures create raving fans or send people away into the Internet black hole, never to be heard from again, except when you’re bashed on some blog or disparaged in a discussion forum post?

What’s the real price you pay as an online business owner for your customer service? Usually, the “real price” boils down to one thing — word-of-mouth-marketing. If your customer likes the way you handle a situation, he will probably tell tell 3-5 others. However, if he feels he was treated poorly or unfairly, he’ll tell 50 of his closest friends about the bad experience. Sad to say, we human beings love to complain much more than to praise. Why burn bridges with your customer when you don’t have to?

Online business owners often create customer service rules that are based on fear — fear of being taken advantage of, fear of someone getting the best of you, fear of someone not paying you for your time What happens if the entire basis of your customer service standards is fear? Well, then fear-based outcomes is what you’ll get, because you tend to get what you choose to focus on. So, if you perceive that everyone in the world is out to get you and take advantage of you, then you’re right.

Is there a good middle ground to choose that protects both your interests and gives your customer a great experience? There is, and you’ll find it in my simple, 10-second philosophy of customer service. Ready? Here it goes…..treat your customer how you want to be treated. That’s it — nothing high tech here.

To help you evaluate your online customer service for my Golden Rule philosophy, here are 7 standards you should consider:

1. Don’t hide behind the legalese. Don’t expect your customer to page through a multi-page, small print document and read and understand all of your stipulations, especially if they’re written in legalese rather than simpler English. If you put unfavorable or difficult terms in your Terms of Service agreement and your customer signs it, sure, you have legal protection to back up whatever terms they stipulated to with their signature. But, will the wrangling over those terms be worth it in the end? If you have terms that your customer might not find favorable at a later date, be sure and point those out to him in the beginning. Don’t expect him to figure it out on his own, and don’t hide behind the cowardly excuse, “Well, you should have read the Terms of Service thoroughly There’s nothing I can do.”

2. Walk a mile in your customer’s shoes. Would you want to be treated the way you’re treating them? If what you’re doing to your customers makes you queasy and uneasy, that’s your instinct telling you that what you’re doing isn’t just and proper. Moreover, how would you feel if you were treated in this fashion?

3. Make it simple to do business with you. Don’t make your customer have to hire an attorney to understand your contract or to do business with you. I’m not advocating that you completely ignore legal help and advice. However, an attorney’s job is to protect you from ALL liability, even those things that have a very small likelihood of actually occurring. Consequently, this usually translates into a very long document that’s very difficult to read and comprehend. Work with your attorney to transform any contracts or Terms of Service agreements that you have into ones that are easily read and understood by the average person.

4. Don’t do customer support via email. When you’re first starting out, using email to answer service problems is ok, but as it becomes more and more difficult to send and receive legitimate business email, you’ll find that you start to lose inquiries as your business grows larger and as your number of inquiries increase. At that point, think about installing a virtual support desk. This is a website that contains common FAQs and answers, as well as offers your customers the ability to open a ticket to report a problem. All correspondence occurs within the site, so you lessen the possibility of lost email. One of the more popular programs is Kayako, www.kayako.com.

5. Make it easy to contact you. Nothing is more irritating than wanting to speak to a real, live person for help and all you find is a contact form or an email address. Don’t leave your customers out in the cold. Offer several options for contacting you, whether that’s by email, phone, instant messaging system, live chat on your website, or a help desk/trouble ticket system.

6. Make it easy to stop doing business with you. I learned a valuable lesson from the Director of Admissions when I worked as a student affairs administrator at a small college and was trying to change a student’s mind about dropping out of school. He told me, “Once they’re already decided to leave, their minds are made up and there’s no turning back. Just let them go.” This applies to your customers as well. There may be a small percentage that you can salvage as a customer in this process, but the overwhelming majority have already made their final decision. Don’t make them jump through hoops to cancel their business with you — make it as easy and painless as possible. However, do follow up with a phone call or email or survey to determine the reason for their departure, but don’t force them to go through this process to exit. Remember the AOL service cancellation call that was recorded and posted online that became a huge embarrassment for AOL? Don’t let your cancellation policy become the next big Internet joke.

7. If in doubt, ask your customer what to do. If you and your customer can’t come to a resolution that feels equitable to both parties, ask your customer what he believes is the fair thing to do. I believe that generally people are good and fair and that most will treat you humanely if they’ve been humanely treated by you. The final decision may not be everything that you want, but it’s probably not everything that your customer wants, either. You can use this strategy to end on a positive note, and while the customer may not return to you, he probably also won’t tell everyone he meets that you’re an ogre, either.

Figure out how you can implement this Golden Rule philosophy in your online business. You’ll find it to be a business asset that’s priceless.

That means he or she will not just love your site but tell others and they tell others about your site. Get the picture? And that’s just one customer we’re talking about. So now before you scratch your head and start day dreaming about your booming business, let’s get down to the basics. Here are a few simple tips to jumpstart your website conversion rate:

Shopping cart. As obvious as this seems, most people do have a shopping cart. But the thing they overlook is the ‘add’ button next to it. You need to mention something like ‘Ad to shopping cart’ or ‘Add to the shopping basket’ etc. This is also known as the call to action and plays a crucial role in getting your visitor to do what you want them to do - shop!

Be honest. Let’s face it - if you don’t have stock of some product, mention it upfront. Customers will respect you for it for having not wasted their time. That’ll also save them the hassle of digging through the online catalogue and adding it to the shopping cart - only to find it’s not in stock. What a waste!

Easy accessibility. It is essential to get your site visibility on the Internet. I mean, there are hordes of e-commerce sites out there literally waiting to get their customers’ business. What makes you think your website is so special?

- Therefore use appropriate keywords to get traffic to your site.

- Optimize your website to ensure better search ranking.

- Use persuasive articles that get the reader’s attention.

Selling the ‘right’ products. When it comes to selling you want your website to do well, right? Well that’s only going to happen if you sell products that customers want. Also important is ensuring you’re selling to the right audience. Imagine selling mascara to a baby! Unthinkable, right?

Easy payment. Customers today have little patience. And we don’t mean it in a bad sense. It’s only natural they are impatient - there’s loads to do and the Internet is just a speck in their lives. If they wish to purchase something they want it done fast, smooth and hassle free. If you want your website to convert more sales, you’ll need to ensure the payment gateway on your website is fast, secure and reliable. Most importantly there should be no slow pages. This can literally kill any sale. If the customer can’t shop fast and secure on your site he or she will go to some other site.

Search functionality. Our customers are patient too. Contradictory? Not really. Not if you consider that if they do not find what they’re looking for, they’ll try searching for it on your website. But you don’t have search functionality in your website? All hell breaks loose and the customer has vanished from your site in no time! Sounds familiar? It’s time to get a search box included in your website This is basic but still many businesses think they can get away without one. Big mistake!

Customer behavior. Analyzing backend search logs to analyze customer behavior can really pay rich dividends. Do customers visit a particular product only during holiday season or during sales? Make sure to keep enough stock handy during these times. Or do customers try downloading an e-book only to leave it midway? An analysis will tell you if the cause is a broken link or slow internet speeds.

Whats in a Name?

One of the first considerations when starting a new blog or website is the name. What domain name you choose goes much deeper than just the name of your site. Yes you want it to say who you are and what your site is about but it goes deeper than that; unless you’re trying to brand yourself. That being said, branding requires a lot of money; or, a lot of time spent marketing & promoting and a certain amount of luck. Sites like eBay or Amazon have huge budgets to work with so unless your another Donald Trump, then consider choosing a name based on sound keyword research and SEO considerations.

What does keyword research have to do with choosing a site/domain name? In short… everything. Depending on the purpose and format of your site, it can make the difference to seeing some search engine traffic in 4 - 6 weeks and never seeing any. Now the reason I say depending is this. If your creating a blog, or an article based site, then you can use keywords per post; keywords in the title and in the post itself; and the search engines will pick up on this and rank that post by itself. I currently have hundreds of search terms coming up on the first page of Google that are for the most part unrelated as in Yes they are all digital products but the search term doesn’t say ‘digital’ or ‘ebook’.

One of the first steps I take when choosing a new site name or domain name is keyword research. For instance; let’s say that you’re going to create a jewelry site. Jewelry, if you do a keyword search, has huge traffic and huge competition. But by doing a keyword search using a good keyword tool use can break this down. I always look for modest traffic and competition. If there is no traffic to a keyword, obviously you don’t want to use it.

I always try to find a keyword or keyword phrase that has at least 5000 monthly searches. Once I find one that interests me; that is related to what my site will be about, I do a Google search to see what the competition is like. Here you want some competition but not too much. The number I look for is 1.5 million results or lower.

Also I check to see if there are lots of sponsored ads for the search term. With this criteria, you know there is money in this keyword otherwise nobody would be paying to have ads on it and the search results would be low or nil. You can take this one step further by looking at what the top Sponsored Ads are costing. This will give you an idea of the potential earnings this keyword could bring you. If you know that the top ad spot is costing $5 per click, you can use some generic conversion rates to determine what a sale might be worth. This will of course only be an approximation but it’ll give you an idea of whether to proceed to not.

Let’s use broad numbers like 5 — 15% conversion rate. For every 100 visitors, they would realize between 5 and 15 sales at a cost for advertising of $500. On the low end they would break even if they were making $100 per sale. The conversion rates could be lower or higher of course so here it becomes a judgment call. You can educate your guess further by doing some research through affiliate site to see what the average commission is for this particular niche.

Long story short; spend 95% of your time researching the name of your site of blog before casting it in stone. In the long run you’ll be extremely glad you did.

Poker rake back programs put the squeeze affiliates

Online poker began with the first real money poker room opening in 1998.

The advantages were many, poker players could now play up to ten times the number of hands per hour and pay lower rake than live games.
Poker players enjoyed faster action and higher hourly profit rates.

By 2005 there was an estimated 1.8 million players playing at more than 250 online poker rooms.

Players became concerned with the amount they were spending on rake and most poker rooms seemed reluctant to drop their rake prices. Some players were spending more than $20,000 per month on rake alone.

In 2005 was the appearance of the first rake back program, where players could signup under an affiliate and get paid a share of the affiliate’s earnings.
Affiliates are people who get a percentage of the rake as compensation for advertising and recruiting new players to the poker room.
Poker rooms share stories of turning dust into gold with their poker affiliate programs.
For most poker affiliates the story is often much tougher, because rake back affiliates are paying players to play at the poker rooms, many of their customers are in fact existing poker players, signing up with a second account to get rake back. Essentially stealing poker clients from existing poker affiliates.

Some poker rooms decided to ban the practice of offering cash incentives to sign up new players, sighting that it gave those affiliates an unfair advantage. Less money was spent on advertising and gaining new players with a new focus on converting existing players into rake back programs.
This did little to stop the avalanche of rake back programs appearing as they converted more and more players, for every poker room that disallowed the practice of rake back three others would open that allow it.

Even though there were these set backs, online poker continued to gain exposure through media and poker events like World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker.

In 2006 there was an estimated 3 million online players, almost double that of the previous year. A new concept in poker marketing launched, paying affiliates high commissions up to 35% and paying players 50% rake back. This new program insured affiliates of good profit margins and that players will not be lost to other rake back programs.

Your next step is to begin to post all of your articles, one by one, to your Blog. Don’t worry about formatting or fonts or anything like that for now. Just get the content posted. Newsletter and Ezine editors will begin to pick up your articles from your Blog and your Blog traffic will grow, very slowly but steadily.

And put a hit counter on your blog-you’ll want to be able to measure the traffic.

Go to your Help menu, select the Help Center, scroll down the page to Advanced Use and choose Add-ons. At the top of that menu will be “Hit Counter and Statistics” which takes you to a page of hit counters.

I use “Bravenet”-it’s free and they provide a comprehensive array of stats about you Blog visitors. Go to their site and grab the code to attach to your blog. Just copy it to the clipboard. Then go to your Blog and open the Dashboard, select Layout and then “Add a Page Element”.

Now Find the link for ‘HTML/Javascript’ and click on the ‘Add to Blog’ link to access the text field. Then just paste the code into the content box, enter “Hit Counter” in the title box and “Save Changes”. The hit counter will now show up at the top of your Blog page.

That’s it…you’re live with your very own Blog. Just keep on posting…every day is best! Keep on Winning
